Dogs are a part of your family. They can be your best friend and companion for life. This means they may even earn a place of honor in your wedding ceremony, as our Atlanta wedding photographers know well. While it takes a little more planning and organization to pull off, having your furry friend be a part of your big day can be both meaningful and super adorable! This week I wanted to take a look back at some of our favorite wedding day dog photos and give you some ideas if you want to include your pet in your wedding!
There are plenty of ways you can make your pet part of your wedding ceremony. Many brides and grooms give their pet a role in their bridal party, like “ring bearer” or “dog of honor”. Some couples even gave them their own adorable and personalized bandana or ensemble to wear at the ceremony, which I personally love! You can assign a friend or family member to take care of them through the ceremony and guide them down the aisle during the processional. The person in charge can keep them calm during the ceremony by giving them treats or a toy. Another way to make your pet feel special is to include a tray of their favorite snacks, or bake a “pupcake” for them to have at the reception with everyone else.
For those planning to include a pet in your wedding, there are some logistics you’ll want to think about. You’ll want to check with your venue ahead of time to see if the venue allows pets and, if they do, what their rules and restrictions are regarding them. It also might be smart to choose an outdoor venue, where your pet has room to roam around and play. Also work in plenty of breaks for the designated person to take your pup to do his business, or just stretch their legs so they don’t get stir-crazy or feel cooped up. If you are outside and you know it will be hot, consider little socks or booties for your dog so that their feet won’t get burned.
Of course, if you’re still not sure about having your pup at your wedding ceremony, you can always include them in your engagement session instead! These sessions are meant for you and your partner to show off your personalities and this can go for your pet as well! It is perfectly suited for your pet to play to their hearts content, and it is easy to take breaks during the session if your pup needs it. This may not give them a position of honor at your wedding, but it does let you capture your pet during this milestone in your life in photographs that you’ll want to show off to everyone! Either way, our Atlanta wedding photographers have seen plenty of smart and adorable examples of ways to include your dog in your wedding!
