This week’s engagement session took place at Barrington Hall, which is located in the heart of historic Roswell Georgia. The building is an 1839 greek revival-style mansion built by Roswell King, the founder of the town of Roswell in northern Fulton County. Many of the historic buildings in Roswell are related to Roswell King. The Roswell Mill was also owned by King and Naylor Hall was the home of the book keeper for the Mill.
This couple, JJ and Madeleine, met through their passion for volleyball. They have both been involved in the sport for years as both players and coaches. The sport led to them spending more time together, so they got to know each other better and became good friends. Their friendship started to grow into something more and they eventually fell in love.
I love shooting engagement sessions because I get to know the couple and their personalities. I learn what they are comfortable with and how they interact with each other. JJ and Madeleine were both very good natured and had personalities that complimented each other. JJ was very measured and thoughtful and Madeleine was energetic and playful. They really worked well together!
We started at Barrington Hall early in the morning and we went to the gardens first. They had never been there so I showed them this beautiful tunnel of grapevines, where I photographed them using a flash for backlighting. As the sun got higher in the sky we went to the front of the mansion so we could use the building as a backdrop. We also played around on the front porch. I got the most playful shots as we were leaving, I saw the sun shining low in the backyard to the estate. I told them to go out there and practice their first dance. That is when I saw them play around and be goofy and I loved seeing them have fun!
We then went to Roswell Mill. We walked down to the covered bridge there and I played around with some backlighting again. After that we headed to the waterfalls by the mill race. This was where I learned that they were not only kind but very patient. I showed them how the light changes over time in the mill area since it is in a valley of sorts. The later it got the more the sun would shine on certain parts of the river, which makes for beautiful shots. There is one part of the river where, if you get it just right, you get this great light on the waterfall in the background. They waited for the light as we chatted and learned more about each other. Then the time came, and we got our shot!
I want to thank JJ and Madeleine for their patience on Saturday. They were so much fun and it was an honor to get to know them more. I am really looking forward to their wedding!!!
