As an Atlanta wedding photographer, I am a big supporter of the many historic theaters we have in Georgia. As a matter of fact, I proposed to my wife in front of the Fox Theater, so my love of these historic venues runs deep.
The most recent theater I have shot at is the Strand Theater on the Marietta Square. It was built in 1935 as an Art Deco movie theater, and you can still see many of those elements in details throughout the lobby and stage area, including the light fixtures and trim. The detailing in the theater chairs was custom-made and reflects the Art Deco style.
Recently, I had the honor of doing a wedding shoot at the Strand for a very fun-loving couple. This couple was great! We went out to the balcony and used the stage as a backdrop, and I even brought a fog machine to enhance the photos. We also used the stage and the theater for backgrounds and just had a grand old time playing around in there. The theater also put the couples names on the Marquee, which was awesome.
I am not just an Atlanta photographer, but I also work with a cultural resources firm. I have done several historic documentation photo projects throughout the United States and Virgin Islands. One of my favorite projects has been working on the historic Grand Opera House in Macon, Georgia. The Theater first opened it’s doors in 1904. There are many elements that hint at the era that you don’t see in modern theaters, such as the opera boxes and the stacked balconies. All of them have been restored to their historic beauty except for the top balcony, which has been preserved in it’s original form since it was built.
The final theater I am going to cover in this blog is the Fabulous Fox Theater, a historic landmark in the heart of Atlanta. As many of you know, I absolutely love the Fox!! I have seen some of my favorite shows there and the company I work for also did a historic preservation plan for the historic venue. There are just so many places nestled in this building that are great for taking photos. There are so many grand places, such as the stairs, stage and Egyptian ballroom, which is where I took this couples engagement photos. The theater is also full of really cool, detailed historic locations, such as the hallways and even the grand bathroom with large mirrors and restored make up chairs.
In this strange time of Covid and social distancing, these theaters are struggling. Please keep them in mind and when they start to open, which they are starting to do at a slow, safe pace, please support them and go see some awesome shows in beautiful historic theaters! You certainly will not regret it!
Thanks so much for visiting. I hope you keep coming back and seeing what the Atlanta wedding photographers at AtlantaArtisticWeddings are up to. Also, please drop me a line if you have any questions. I would love to hear from you!
Thanks again!
David
