This week’s couple, Anthony and Sheffiga, were awesome. We did their engagement shoot at the Millennium Gate at Atlantic Station and another Atlanta Landmark the Olympic Park downtown. It was a beautiful day for a beautiful couple.

We started early in the morning at Atlantic Station. If you have been following this Atlanta wedding photographer’s blog you know that I love shooting in the morning for two reasons. First, there is no one around to make you feel self-conscious. Second, it is also much cooler in the morning, which was perfect for Anthony and Sheffiga since they were both wearing formal attire.

We started right before the sun came out, which was perfect. We went out to 16th Street which is usually one of the busiest streets in Atlanta but at that time of the day no one was there. We went to the middle of the street on the median, where the lighting and location were perfect. In the background we had the Atlanta skyline backlit with the blue hour. The couple were framed with rows of street lights. Since it was dark enough, we were able to use a flash to light the couple up from behind. While we still had that light, we moved quickly to the arch at Millennium Gate. I quickly got the couple on the large plaque stand they have in front and backlit the couple with my flash again. It was very dramatic as you can see.

There are many photo opportunities there at the Millennium Gate, so we went down the stairs where there is a half-circle of Greek columns that frame the entrance to the museum there. I added the flash and lit up the frame of the entrance backlighting the couple once more for dramatic an effect. As the sun came up, we moved around for the best lighting and locations. We used the Greek columns in that area. We also moved toward the bridge that goes over the lake in the center of the park.

As you may know I am a professional film photographer and love old cameras, so this morning I brought out my classic 75-year-old Speed Graphic camera. I shot a few photos with this classic beast. It uses large 4- by 5-inch negatives that make great images. The film medium is so good that the United States Library of Congress still uses them today. You can see examples of my photography there too. It is such a treat shooting with such a classic camera. It makes you stop and think about every little thing that you do when you take a photo. You actually breathe a little deeper, slower and more deliberately when you have to take your time and think about your shot. Anthony and Sheffiga were so patient.

After we were through there we went on to Olympic Park in the center of downtown. There the sun broke through the clouds a few times, so we had some fun with that light too. We walked around to the fountains, green spaces and the Olympic statue there. It was a nice place to cap off your day of photography.
