Many of you may know me as an Atlanta wedding photographer but there is another side of me that you may not know. I have been shooting film for over 40 years.  I am one of the few people in the United States that still shoots large format film. I have shot over 100 large format film projects and at least 40 of those projects are archived in the United States Library of Congress.

For a little context, when I first moved to Atlanta I was working for a cultural resource firm.  In the beginning I did the graphics and maps for our archaeology teams reports detailing their fieldwork results, as well as developed the film of historic resources that came from historians and archaeologists from the field.  I also started shooting artifact photos with the film camera. As I got more comfortable with the 35mm (about 1.38 in), and medium format film I started to shoot large 4 by 5 inch negatives with a large format camera. After that I eventually started to shoot Historic American Building Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) and Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) projects for the Library of Congress.

I recently started to shoot more film projects and my passion for film has been reignited. I love the subtle greys and the warmth that film gives to an image.  Shooting film is a very deliberate process since there is no automatic settings on the camera.  When you are so deliberate you think of each shot a lot longer and you do not overshoot your subject with photos you will not use. It is Zen-like when you walk through the process.

Now I want to bring that passion for film to my client.  We can now shoot a few engagement or wedding photos with an original 1960 Speed Graphic Camera on 4 by 5 large format film. The exposed film is truly a piece of art and is a unique gift from the photographers at Atlanta Artistic Weddings. I will give the negative and a print to the client after the shoot. It will be a one-of-a-kind conversation piece and collectable piece of art. A lot of film photographs and negatives have been collected recently and have been going up in value. More importantly though, I hope the film will be something for our couples to cherish and pass on to their family.
