Every once in a while I get a request for a unique photoshoot. About 3 months ago Samantha contacted me and said she wanted to do a wedding/star wars photoshoot. She is having a small wedding at an air bnb with a few family and friends. While they were there she wanted a few fun photos to share.
Both Samantha and her fiance Matt are big Star Wars fans. They are having their wedding on May the fourth which is a special day for Star Wars fans. The date originated from the pun "May the Fourth be with you", a variant of the Star Wars catchphrase "May the Force be with you". Even though the holiday was not created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans have chosen to celebrate the holiday. It is also known as Star Wars Day. On their wedding day Samantha and Matt are going to sneak out of their wedding outfits and change into Star Wars outfits to surprise their guests. It should be a hoot!
When it came to the day of the shoot I met Samantha and Matt with their family around the Mill at Stone Mountain Park. There is a bathroom at the top where Samantha could change into her wedding dress. . The dress was beautiful and was perfect for her. Samantha’s hair was done with a lone Star War’s braid down the back. Matt came prepared in dress clothes and a vest.
We started late in the day so we could get a sunset and start shooting at night with the light sabers. The Mill area has so many options there. The waterfall makes for a great backdrop. The Mill run next to the Mill is a fun little feature to shoot around also. The whole area is a plethora of backdrops for photos. Once we finished at the mill it was starting to get dark and Matt brought out the light sabers.
We moved to the stone quarry across the street from the mill. I chose the quarry because it has a tunnel that runs under the train tracks that wraps around the mountain. It is dark there and perfect for accenting the light sabers. We started playing around with a technique called light painting. It is where you have a long exposure with your camera and you can paint the light in your photograph. The lightsabers were a perfect source of light for light painting. The whole shoot was so much fun playing different poses with the light sabers. It gave a very cinematic Star Wars vibe.
Congrats to Samantha and Matt and thank you for one of the most creative photo shoots that I have had in a long time! May the fourth be with the both of you!
