One of the latest trends in wedding photography is shooting at night. The wedding photographers at Atlanta Artistic Weddings have a lot of experience with this, whether it be the sparkler exit or sneaking out of the wedding and taking a few dramatic photos at the blue hour.
Shooting at night is not for the faint of heart! Not to get too technical, but you need to know your camera and location intimately . You need to know how to balance your ambient light (the natural light around you) and artificial light (man-made light). The artificial light can be produced by street lamps, window lights, hanging lights, and the remote flashes controlled by the camera (which we use the most). You balance these light sources by through the power of the artificial lights. You control the brightness of that light by distance to the light, or by the actual power supply to the flash. You manage the balance of the ambient light and flash by the ISO (the light sensitivity on your camera’s sensor. If you increase the ISO you let in more ambient light and if you decrease the ISO you rely more on your flashes.
One of the night photos we do at every wedding is the exit shot. There are many types of exits such as confetti, flags, fake snow and sparklers. In regards to lighting the best are usually with sparklers. Because they give off the perfect amount of light for the crowd and we can light the couple with artificial light from the our strobes. The exit takes a lot of coordination and communication. I tell the couple to stay close together so you will not see the strobe behind them. I then balance the camera flash and coordinate with the crowd to give the guests their the sparklers. It sounds like quite a dance but when you pull it off it is magnificent!
The other photos we usually do is called the blue hour shot. The blue hour is 20 minutes after sunset or 20 minutes before sunrise. You will see the sky turn this deep aqua blue and it makes for a great background for photos. For these shots, We set up the lights before the couple goes outside. That way we can be efficient with their time and they will not spend too much time away from their guests. The shot takes about 4 minutes to do but it can have some beautiful dramatic results.
When we are shooting in downtown Atlanta we usually do some outdoor shots during the evening on the sidewalk or street. We have done several om front of at Georgian Terrace and around the Fox Theater at night. These Atlanta landmarks make for great backdrops for some photos that you will cherish forever.
