If you choose to write your own vows, there are a few pieces of advice you may want to follow before you begin. First, you’ll want to start writing them way ahead of time. This will give you time to really think about what you want to say and maybe rehearse a bit before your big day. You may also want to talk to your fiance and set some ground rules for the vows, like the length or tone, so that you are on the same page. Another smart thing to do before actually writing your vows is to brainstorm. It can be helpful to write up a list of ideas, memories, anecdotes, etc. that you want to include, and maybe even write a few rough drafts first. This can help you identify which points are unnecessary and which are really important, which is a good way to ensure your vows don’t run too long.
So, now you’re ready to sit down with a pen and paper and write your vows. If you’re unsure of where to start or what to talk about, write out some traits that you love about your significant other and what brought you two together in the first place. You can never go wrong with personal anecdotes as well, such as how you met, your first date or your proposal story. Then to top it all off, think about where you hope the two of you will be in the future, say five years, and include those hopes in the vows. This can all be presented in a sweet/romantic way for sure, but don’t be afraid of adding humor to the moment, too, maybe with an inside joke or quote from a movie/song you both love. And don’t worry about sounding too cheesy/corny, either. It is a happy occasion after all! As long as your vows come from your heart, they will sound perfect!

For those who are more nervous about having to say your vows in front of everyone, there are things you can do to ease your mind there, too. First off, you can practice your vows in front of a friend or family member, maybe even your best man or groomsmen. This will help you determine where you can pause, take a breath, or where there may be laughter. Plus, this way, you’ll know at least some in your audience have already heard your vows, while still keeping them a secret from your significant other. You can also video tape yourself reciting your vows and play it back so you can practice how to inflect or emphasize certain words the way you want. This will also help you practice your hand gestures and posture so that you feel more confident while standing up at the altar.
Some people may find writing their own wedding vows to be incredibly nerve-wracking, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of tips and tricks to ease the stress of doing so. Writing your own wedding vows can be a very moving and heartfelt touch to your wedding ceremony. Your wedding vows are a special thing shared between you and your partner and, if they come from the heart, then they will be something you and your spouse will treasure forever.
