The Atlanta wedding photographers at Atlanta Artistic Weddings absolutely love love! As it turns out, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to celebrate love, one of them being National Proposal Day, which takes place on March 20th each year. Unlike Valentine’s Day, where people celebrate affection of all kinds amongst family, friends, etc., National Proposal Day is where one should make a vow or commitment specifically to their significant other. This holiday is meant to give people courage to take the plunge with the one they love and commit to them in a special way. Take time to plan a romantic gesture for your loved one on the day and, if you’re stumped, here is a little bit of background and a few ideas to give you a head start.
No one knows the exact date that National Proposal Day supposedly started, but it is said that the holiday came about when John Michael O’Laughlin saw a cousin’s seemingly perfect relationship end because there was no proposal. He then decided there needed to be a day where couples were encouraged to talk about their future intentions for their relationship. He chose March 20th as the date for multiple reasons. First, it was close to Valentine’s Day, so people were still thinking about their relationships after that day. Second, the 20th is the vernal equinox, or the beginning of Spring, which is the one day where the planets are perfectly aligned, which is supposedly lucky for making important decisions such as this. O’Laughlin’s intentions seemed to spread by word of mouth, especially with the advent of social media, and it is now a national holiday.
So, what can you do to mark the day? Well, the most obvious way to celebrate would be to pop the question to your significant other! You can also do a variation on a proposal, such as pick out engagement/promise rings together or, if you’re already married, have a ceremony to renew your vows to one another. However, if the time isn’t right for the two of you to discuss marriage, there are other things you can do to show your significant other that you are committed, like introducing them to your family or planning a special night together, just the two of you. The most important thing is that you and your partner use the occasion to talk about your relationship and what your relationship means to each of you.
You don’t need a special occasion to show your loved one you care, but there are so many days of the year meant to celebrate love! National Proposal Day can serve as the perfect opportunity to start the next chapter of your life. This year on March 20th, be sure to make the most of this occasion and do something extra special with your loved one!
