If you follow our blog and social media then you know that we constantly talk about the important questions you should ask your wedding photographer. However, most people may not consider that the questions your photographer asks you are equally important. Now I know that answering questions from someone you likely just met may seem nerve-wracking and nosy to some people. However, there are plenty of reasons why you’ll want a photographer who will take the time to get to know more about you and what you want on your wedding day.

Your photographer should ask you about the general logistics for the day, as it will help them plan ahead and get organized. In asking about the schedule and order of events, your photographer can get a wealth of information. They can plan out how early they will need to arrive to set up, how much time they will have for posed photographs of the family, and when to be ready to capture certain critical moments, like the first kiss or the cutting of the cake. If they ask you about your venue, this can help them scope out the perfect backdrops for your posed photos and determine adjustments they’ll need for lighting, space, etc. ahead of time. Once these plans are made, it is typical that your photographer will provide you with a checklist or layout of their plans for the day, and maybe some things for you to consider, so that you are both on the same page.

It is also so important that your photographer wants to know who you and your partner are personally. Our Atlanta wedding photographers usually ask our couples about how they met, how long they’ve been together, what they do for a living, and other general questions. Our team may also ask a bit about your family and traditions or details you’re adding to the wedding. Again this may seem nosy and you may think “i’ve just met this person five minutes ago”. However, answering these questions will help your photographer figure out multiple details. You can give your photographer details that will help signal to them what decorative details, like a special photo set up or accessory you’re carrying, or traditional ceremonial moments will be meaningful so they can capture it on camera.

Also, the more you speak with each other the more they will know about how best to work with you. For instance, they can get a sense of whether you are outgoing or if you might not be comfortable in front of a camera, which will tell them what poses and angles to shoot from. This is a crucial element of helping your day become a success and setting up an engagement session with them will help break the ice and make these conversations easier. Whenever you are talking with your wedding photographer, take a minute and ask them if they have any questions for you, because the more you and your photographer get to know about each other, the better your pictures will be. You both want your special day to go perfectly and your photographer can be a great ally when you work together.
