How To Capture The Perfect Group Shot
Part of being an Atlanta wedding photographer is managing group photos. Whether it’s family, friends, or an ambitious shot of the whole celebration, you’ll need to know how to handle several people and personalities at once in order to get that perfect shot. Here are some tricks and tips our photographers use to do just that.
Planning Is Key
You will want to make sure you set up the most ideal time and place for the photo. You’ll want to do it in the evening, possibly during golden hour, so that your group isn’t squinting into the sun or sweating from being cramped together in the heat of the sun. Also, your photo will likely already be busy so you’ll want to find a simple backdrop or landscape to take the photo in front of and try to get your bride and groom to encourage guests to wear solid colors, as they look better in photos. I typically like to do the large group shot when we have all the people in one place. That is usually right after the first dance or cake cutting. I will survey the room or venue and look for a large clear space that can accommodate everyone.
Find The Right Equipment
It’s important to have everything you need when you take the photo as well. You may want use a tripod and long lens to get a stable, wide enough shot. Also bring enough lighting to make sure everyone is well lit and visible in the photo. Another secret to getting a great group shot is a ladder. It one the most important pieces of equipment to have with you at a wedding. This enables me to get the height to get to see the people in the very back of the group shot that might other wise be blocked by the people in front. You may also want to make sure the venue or one of the vendors has a microphone so that everyone in the group can hear your instructions.
Don’t Be Afraid To Take The Lead

When organizing a large group of people you have to be a leader. If you are one of a few photographers working an event, designate someone to be that organizer. Generally I like to coordinate with the DJ, since they have a microphone to get everyone's attention. Tell the DJ to direct everyone to your preferred location. Once everyone is there you should have a few setups and poses ready to keep things moving, such as taller in back, shorter in front and keep family units together. Obviously the bride and groom go front and center. It may be good to do a silly pose first so the group can get their wiggles out. Most importantly, be sure to direct everyone enthusiastically and be positive so everyone smiles and has a great time.
