One of the best things about being an Atlanta wedding photographer are the many cultures we see throughout the city. This carries into the weddings, which often turn into cultural celebrations. All wedding details tell the story of the couple and where they came from. My favorite detail happens to be the wedding dress so this week, I wanted to take a walk through all of the wonderful cultural wedding attire from around the globe our photographers have seen over the years.

Jewish Orthodox

The guide for what a Jewish orthodox bride wears on her wedding day are pretty simple. An Orthodox Jewish bride usually wears white and her collarbone, elbows and knees must be covered. Sometimes it is acceptable for a bride to wear a shawl or jacket over a less modest dress if that is what she prefers. This is to symbolize her purity and helps keep the sanctity of the ceremony.

Chinese

At most Chinese weddings, the bride wears a cheongsam or qipao. This dress is typically red and often elaborately adorned with gold dragon and phoenix symbols. In Chinese culture, red symbolizes happiness, prosperity and good luck. Nowadays most brides wear western attire for the wedding ceremony and change into this traditional attire for a reception or tea ceremony.

Korean

During her Paebaek Ceremony, this bride wore a Wonsam or Hwarot, which is a ceremonial jacket is bright and ornate, with red silk on the outside and blue silk on the inside, as well as flowers stitched in the fabric to symbolise riches. This bride also chose to include cranes, a Korean symbol of longevity and constancy. She wears red while her groom wears blue, to symbolize yin and yang and represent the two colors of the Korean flag.

Hindu

Most Hindu brides wear a traditional lehenga or a saree wedding dress. A Lehenga is an ensemble comprised of an elaborate (and often heavy) skirt, a cropped or long blouse called the choli, and a dupatta that is draped over the head or shoulders. This bride chose to wear one ensemble for her wedding ceremony and another, more brightly colored one for her reception.

Muslim

In many cultures, the traditional attire for the Muslim bride is a saree. She uses the pallu to cover her head or a separate scarf. We recently had a Muslim wedding where the celebration went on for two days. The bride opted to wear a red Shalwar kameez, or loose trousers and a tunic, with a dupatta, or scarf, to cover the head on the first day and a pink saree on the second day.

Nigerian

Nigerian traditional wedding dresses are known as 'aso oke'. The attire is made of thick fabric with long sleeves that widen at the wrists and a kaftan-like skirt, which the bride ties around her waist. The fabric and colors are usually bright and representative of the couples tribe. The women also carry a fan and tie a gele (an ornate head wrap) on their head.
