The origin of the wedding cake topper is debatable. Some suggest that they came about as a way for people to find the cake over the large number of guests attending the wedding. However, the most widely accepted theory is that it came about in the late 1800’s. A baker’s daughter was getting married and the baker was thinking of what to get his daughter and her fiance as a gift. The baker ended up making a figurine of his daughter and new son-in-law and presented it to them on top of the cake he made so that everyone would be able to see it. Since that moment people have believed the cake topper was a symbol for family, love, and unity and more people started putting similar figures on their cakes.

There is not much information about wedding cake toppers as a tradition outside of the United States. However, the history of cake toppers in the U.S. is very curiously tied to world events, especially those that caused widespread fear. In the 1920’s, just after World War I, cake toppers became more prominent among high society in the U.S. Then in the 1950’s, just after World War II, the tradition became commonplace throughout the country. This reinforced the idea that people saw the bride and groom figurines as symbols of unity and love in times of hardship and people have been using cake toppers for special, happy occasions ever since.

Today, cake toppers have moved beyond the simple bride and groom figurines and there is an endless variety of designs you can choose. There are bride and groom figures of all ethnicities and orientations, and even some where you can add your favorite furry friends! Many couples also choose to get toppers based on their occupations, hobbies, recent holidays, or their wedding theme. Couples have started to really have fun with their cake toppers and make them more personalized and special. All the more reason to keep your cake topper and turn it into a Christmas ornament, or other keepsake, as a reminder of the love and commitment you and your partner share!
