A couple of weeks ago, this guy named AJ contacted me.  He wanted me to photograph him proposing to his girlfriend on the Helipad on the roof of Vantanas.  It was going to be a total surprise to her!

It was going to take a lot of planning to pull something like this off, so we contacted Vantanas to work out the logistics and timing.  The plan was for him to pretend to take his girlfriend out to eat.  He would go to Centennial Park and the ferris wheel then across the park to Vantanas, where he would tell her that he has access to the roof there and its beautiful view of the city.

For those of you who don’t know much about Vantanas, let me explain how cool this place is.  It is a premier event space with dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows which reveal a  sweeping view of downtown, midtown, and even Stone Mountain.  It is perched atop the 14th and 15th stories of the Park Pavilion building next to Centennial Park.  When you get to the roof’s helipad you get an unobstructed view of the Atlanta skyline.

When the big day came I arrived early to get in place and coordinate with the staff.  AJ was nervous and was texting me updates on his location.  At 4pm AJ and his girlfriend came to the venue and got off the elevator underneath the helipad.  I snuck around behind them, when he got down on one knee I jumped on the roof and started shooting.  She was surprised to say the least!  She started crying and said yes!!!

Then there was one more surprise for his girlfriend.  He was going to pretend once again that he had to make a quick stop before dinner at a friend's place.  What she did not know is that he had rented a space downtown where all their friends were waiting for them for a surprise engagement party!  I left them on the roof to get to the location in time to capture the moment they walked in. Once they arrived the girlfriend was surprised again with shouts of “congratulations!”.  AJ is a great planner.   He and his friends can also keep a secret!  The whole operation went smoothly and now they are planning their wedding!

It was such an honor to capture such a special moment between two people.  I want to thank AJ for giving me that honor and to his girlfriend for being so gracious.  It was a great beginning to a long life they will have together.  I can’t wait to see their next chapter!
