I throw these sessions in for free for every couple that wants to do it because they are so much fun and the brides really get to let loose. This trend is growing, but it is still fairly new, so here’s a little more info about what a trash the dress session is.

Trash the dress sessions are usually done after a large event where a nice, formal dress is worn, which could be anything a wedding to a prom, and are generally shot in the style of fashion photography. Such photos often take place on a beach. However, they can be done in various places, such as lakes and streams, city streets, rooftops, water falls, muddy fields, tub-shower units, garbage dumps, fields, and abandoned buildings. During the shoot, the woman will wear her ball gown, prom dress, or wedding dress and "trash" the dress in the process by getting it wet, dirty, or, in extreme circumstances, tearing, cutting, or destroying the garment. In the majority of these photo-sessions, the dress is not ruined and is easily cleaned, depending on the type of dress and the way the subject chooses to trash it.

The idea or motivation for brides to do this is symbolic, representing the end of the wedding and her transformation from a bride to a wife. It also feels more ceremonial than storing it forever, never to be seen again. After all, the wedding has already happened and there aren’t many opportunities to wear a wedding dress again. The session can also be whatever the bride wants it to be, which is part of what is so freeing about it. She can include her spouse, the bridal party, or flower girl and the tone can be fun, romantic, elegant, comical, and even sensual, depending on what the bride wants.

My favorite part of a trash the dress shoot is that you don’t have the pressure of a wedding schedule! You can take as much time as you like and choose the perfect location and process for trashing your dress. You are also not worried about messing up your dress, as you would be during your wedding. Getting your dress dirty is the point of the session, so go crazy! These shoots are so much fun and your personality can really shine through in the photos, as opposed to formal wedding photos, which may feel very stiff and posed.
