How To Hit The Perfect Note With Your Wedding Reception Set List!
The Atlanta wedding photographers at Atlanta Artistic Weddings love to have fun at weddings, and wedding receptions are made for fun! The reception is where you get to celebrate, let loose, and dance the night away with those closest to you, and a big part of that is the music. Every guest is going to have their own taste in music, so it can be overwhelming when creating your set list for the reception. However, music means something to everyone, and there are plenty of ways you can create the perfect set list that will make your reception a night to remember!
First off, play a variety of songs so that the music isn’t monotonous. You’ll want about 3-5 hours of music, and keep in mind it takes about 52 songs to fill 3 hours. During this time, you should pick both slow and upbeat songs so that there is a nice tempo and flow to the party. For instance, the first song of the night, as you and your wedding party enter the reception, should be an upbeat song that’s easy to dance to. This will set the mood and get your guests pumped up for the night ahead! Then, every slow often, throw in a slow song so your guests don’t get burnt out from all that high energy. You should also be sure to include songs for all musical tastes and generations, from Frank Sinatra to 80’s classic rock to current pop music. This will ensure there’s something on your set list to get everyone on their feet! To ensure that there are no lulls in energy or wierd transitions, it’s a good idea to listen to your playlist beforehand to ensure it’s exactly what you want.
One thing you should be sure to remember is that you shouldn’t be afraid of popular party anthems or “guilty pleasure” songs. If you’re worried these songs are too cheesy or overplayed, don’t be. The wedding reception is a time for you and your guests to let your hair down and just have a good time together, so it requires songs that will get people moving and even singing along. Songs like “Dancing Queen” and “Don’t Stop Believing” will let them do just that. Another tip to help you keep the party atmosphere going is to only include songs about love and happiness in your set list. If you hire a DJ, ensure that they avoid any songs that send a largely negative message or bring up bad memories for you or your guests. If you are unsure about what to include, you can always poll your guests beforehand to see what songs they would suggest, or create a collaborative playlist on Spotify, or any music app you choose, so your guests can add songs themselves.
Of course, your opinions and what you want to hear are crucial to your set list as well. Your wedding reception set list should also include songs that are incredibly meaningful and personal to you. For instance, if you and your best man/maid of honor have a song that represents your friendship, you should include that song and take a moment to celebrate those closest to you. You can also include songs that are family traditions, such as the song your parents and grandparents danced to at their wedding. You can even play a slow, romantic song while inviting all the married couples in attendance to the floor for a dance. If your family has a traditional dance they do on special occasions, such as the Macarena or the Hokey Pokey, that can be a meaningful way to get your guests up and moving while celebrating the start of your new family. You may even make some new memories with loved ones as well, which is a beautiful thing!
After months of planning and organizing your wedding, the reception is the moment you deserve, a moment where you celebrate this momentous occasion with those closest to you. The music set list is one of the most important details at a wedding reception and can lead to lots of fun and even new memories with loved ones. Music is something that speaks to everyone and with the right songs, you can create some really special memories with the ones you love.
